Frequently Asked Questions

  • How am I matched with a Mentor? Complete your profile with information about yourself and what you're looking to gain out of the mentorship. Our Mentorship Program Advisors will match you with a Mentor based on the information you share in your profile. You will receive a notification once you are matched, and you will be able to view their profile and start connecting.
  • How long will the Mentors be available? We ask our Mentors to make commitments of 6 months (with a possibility of a 6 month extension) to ensure that their Mentee can fully benefit from the mentorship. If a Mentor must leave the relationship early, we request at least one month's notice in order to search for a suitable replacement.
  • What should I do if my mentoring relationship isn't going well? We encourage Mentees to inform their Mentor and contact a Mentorship Program Administrator as soon as possible or send an email to theteam@buildingbuilders.ca. We provide full support in breaking away from the mentorship relationship in a healthy and constructive manner, so as to not damage the Mentee's network and professional credibility.
  • What is the preferred browser for Chronus? We encourage Mentees to use Chrome - or - download the Chronus App from Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

Mentee DO's

  1. Take a proactive role in shaping the relationship. Understand what you want from the mentorship, be the first to communicate, provide context for yourself and your goals, set meetings and lead your mentorship process.
  2. Commit to at least one interaction with your Mentor per month. Set aside time for the mentoring process and honor all appointments. We encourage all forms of communication. If meeting in person, we STRONGLY suggest meeting in a public space (e.g. worksite).
  3. Make best use of Chronus; use your Connection Plan, create agendas, set deadlines, track progress, schedule meetings in advance, and review feedback.
  4. Respect your Mentor’s time and efforts by reciprocating it with hard work and showing up ready, with planned topics for discussion. Set aside time for the sessions and keep all scheduled appointments.
  5. Respond in a timely manner to your Mentor's feedback and emails.
  6. Be clear about your expectations; Identify how your Mentor can best assist you. Find mutual ground and hold accountability.
  7. Be open and honest about your challenges and weaknesses. Balance a personal and professional relationship with your Mentor.
  8. If a challenge arises with your Mentor, it should first be discussed within the mentoring relationship. The next step would be to contact a Mentorship Program Advisor or email theteam@buildingbuilders.ca.
  9. Act professionally; think of your mentorship as a step in your career development in the BC construction industry.

Mentee DON'Ts

  1. Ask for advice on everything. Have a purpose in each request.
  2. Ask your Mentor for a job - Building Builders is NOT a job placement service.
  3. Blame the Mentor if their advice doesn't work out.
  4. Expect the Mentor to know all the answers.
  5. Commit yourself to obligations you cannot keep.
  6. Cancel meetings/visits with your Mentor at the last minute.
